Culture and Adventure across the UK
A Rossall Education is about much more than what happens in the classroom - though the provision of outstanding teaching and learning is at the heart of all that we do. We believe that it is our responsibility to provide our pupils with exciting opportunities to experience the incredible cultural diversity that exists here within the United Kingdom.
Our programme of weekend activities provides an opportunity for children to experience the spectacular beauty of the North West and participate in adventurous activities in the wilds of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Visits to the great northern cities of Liverpool and Manchester are complemented by weekends in the capital cities of Dublin, Edinburgh and London. We are also thrilled to offer students the opportunity to visit the historic University cities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Our weekend programme is uniquely ambitious because we want our boarders to feel inspired by the world beyond School.

Frequently Asked Questions
What bedding do I need to provide?
A duvet and pillow are provided for all boarding pupils, these include covers, but you are welcome to bring your covers or additional items of bedding in ‘Single’ size.
How do I do my laundry?
Your House Matron works all day on a Monday through Friday and does laundry every day. Pupils do not need to do their own laundry. It is important to use the Name Label service from SchoolBlazer so your uniform returns to you. Your bed will be changed every Tuesday.
Can I use my mobile phone in the UK? Or how can I get a SIM card?
EU Roaming allows a lot of European students to continue using their home mobile numbers, though this may have additional charges. It is preferable to arrange a SIM card before travelling, as it will mean you can use your phone immediately on landing in the UK. Current pupils favour GiffGaff and VOXI due to their impressive, low-cost data packages.
How much money should I bring?
You should not bring large sums of cash into the country, and we do not accept cash payment for fees. However, you may wish to bring money with you for social activities. You should decide with your parents how much money you can bring to Rossall. Large sums of money should be handed to your Houseparent to be placed in the safe. You can withdraw this money when you need it. You may decide you prefer to have a bank account instead, however.
How do I get a bank account?
If you choose to have a bank account while at Rossall School your Houseparent will be able to help you organise setting one up. Your money can be stored in a safe by your Houseparent until you have done this. HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking corporations and one of our closest local branches. It may be possible for you to set up an
HSBC account at home that allows you to spend in the UK before moving to Rossall.
Can I buy groceries or snacks?
Rossall provides boarders with all their meals and there are small kitchen areas in the Boarding Houses, well-stocked with items such as tea bags, bread, jam etc. We encourage healthy eating at Rossall but students can buy food items - some of our older students even enjoy cooking in the House for their fellow boarders.
How often do I have to tidy my bedroom?
Rossall asks all boarding students to look after their rooms and keep them tidy as you will use your space to do home study as well as sleep and socialise.
Our Boarding Houses are your homes at Rossall, and we all work together to keep them nice environments for each other. Your Houseparent will regularly check your room and, if necessary, ask you to tidy up.

Junior Boarding House

Pupils tell us that boarding means being part of a big family: everyone is there for each other. The support and encouragement of our Houseparents, Tutors, Captains and Monitors ensures students quickly become involved in the life of their boarding house. There are also friendly inter-house competitions which are a feature of life on campus.

The Junior Boarding house has dorimtories , a common room, a games room known as the Wreck Room, a piano, a kitchen for snacks and weekend baking, and a library with computer workstations and internet access.

While each House has its own unique history and personality, all foster an environment in which boarders are encouraged to achieve their true potential and develop valuable skills and qualities such as:

- Communication
- Teamwork
- Leadership
- Empathy
- Cultural understanding

Assheton Observatory
and Cooke Telescope

The Assheton Observatory was built before 1860, and its original telescope was used to track the transit of Venus. In 1904, the Assheton Family donated a new lens to the School, and the Thomas Cooke telescope was installed.

In the 1950s, astronomer William Herbert Steavenson used the telescope to observe the close approach of Mars to Earth, which had not occurred for fifteen years at that time.

In the early 2000s, Dr Nick Lister and the Lawrence House Trust restored the Observatory with the help of governors and parents, including the comedian Syd Little.

Old Rossallian and former Astronomer Royal Sir Francis Graham Smith opened the Centre and restored Assheton Observatory. Lord and Lady Clitheroe of the Assheton Family also contributed to the restoration and attended the opening.

Chapel of St John the Baptist
Future Heritage Project

Our most iconic buildings date from the mid-nineteenth century. The Sumner Library, Big School and the Chapel of St John the Baptist are all listed buildings, noted for their architectural importance. Time has not stood still and these buildings are now in need of urgent repair.

Wind, rain and salt have exerted a toll on the physical fabric of our listed buildings. It is the case that crumbling masonry, corroded metal, rotten roof beams and leaking pipes threaten the very existence of our buildings.

Safeguarding the future of these buildings will cost well in excess of £1.5 million.

Our Local Area
The Lake District

RossHockey
Rossall's Unique Sport

Rossall School is a unique school in the UK, as it has its own beach that was gifted by Queen Victoria. The monarch visited Fleetwood with Prince Albert in 1847 and gifted Rossall beach to the School. Pupils have access to the beach and promenade during both lessons and free time.

The Nursery children regularly visit the beach to play, explore, and learn. In the Preparatory School, children aged 4-11 visit the beach as part of Rossall Rotation, an innovative curriculum that engages pupils in a range of supercurricular activities, including Beach School. In the Senior School and Sixth Form, the beach is used for Combined Cadet Force training, sports and fitness activities, and art lessons to name just a few examples.

Rossall also plays its own unique beach sport - RossHockey (Rossall Hockey). It is an inter-house sport that combines rugby and hockey. The sport even has its own Wikipedia page. Old Rossallians, the school's alumni, return to the school every year for a weekend of events that includes a game of RossHockey. Photos of the game can be seen in this gallery from 1947, 1980, and more recently.

Rossall Farm
Graeme's Garden

Rossall's Farm, which is also known as Graeme's Garden, is named after Graeme Marrs MBE, an Old Rossallian and former Rossallian Club President. The farm is home to a variety of animals including three pigmy goats - Trumpet, Hercules, and Romeo, guinea pigs, rabbits, and chickens.

The farm and animals work alongside many of our academic departments to enrich the curriculum and support classroom learning. The Nursery regularly visits the farm and the Preparatory School includes the farm in Rossall Rotation - a series of super curricular learning sessions. The farm and animals also feature in our activities programme and offer children the opportunity to care for and love them, as well as participate in our wellbeing programme.

Studies have shown that being around animals can help to reduce stress and anxiety. The rabbits and guinea pigs can often be found relaxing with our Sixth Formers in their common room.

Rossall Sport
Centre of Excellence

The extraordinary success that Rossall has achieved in terms of sporting greatness has attracted attention both nationally and internationally. Our success is attributable to an ambitious vision that balances elite performance with a spectacularly diverse and wonderfully inclusive offering.

If sport is your passion and you wish to benefit from outstanding coaching, well-structured training programmes and top class facilities, then Rossall is the obvious destination of choice for your future.

We believe that children’s physical and emotional wellbeing is invariably well supported by playing sports. Achieving ‘flow’ or ‘living in the moment’ supports our mental health and, at its heart, this is what sport offers to players and fans alike. It provides a paradigm that sits apart from the complex, challenging, and sometimes worrying, world within which we live. Sport provides a creative space full of possibility and a context within which lifelong friendships are formed. We believe that sport has the capacity to teach us as much about the human condition as the greatest works of philosophy.

Rossall is the obvious choice of school if your love of sport is balanced by a desire to thrive in all areas of your education. Every summer, our Sport Scholars progress to top universities within the UK and a number win 100% scholarships to universities in the US. Whether your ultimate dream is to secure a professional contract at a football club or join one of the leading golf programmes in the States, Rossall provides the platform necessary for you to develop a competitive edge.

Studying at Rossall School
Frequently Asked Questions

When do I receive my timetable?
On your first day of school, you will be given your timetable. A member of the Academic team will talk through how your timetable works and what your school day will look like. If you have had to arrive at School without confirming your subject options, your Houseparent or Tutor will be able to help you organise a meeting to decide.

Do I have to buy any course textbooks before I arrive?
Any required books are provided at School and you do not need to bring any with you. Each subject department is different and some books may require a small fee to be added to your bill, but you will not have to purchase books from an external bookseller.

Do I need to buy stationery? Do I need a calculator?
You should have a basic set of stationery and a notebook. Our School shop, RosShop, sells a wide variety of stationery that covers all Rossall student needs including, but not limited to: Lever arch folders, notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters, rulers, maths sets, and exam board-approved calculators for GCSE, A Level and IB. Subject-specific stationery is advised by the department. Where items need to be purchased, they will be available in RosShop.

Do I need to bring a laptop?
Pupils in Years 10 to 13 are required to bring a laptop or tablet to use in classes.

Is there an induction programme?
Inductions programmes are set up for pupils arriving at different times throughout the school year. They are tailored to the pupil and will normally include a tour of the campus, IT support and induction, and meeting tutors and teachers. You will ‘buddy up’ with someone in your tutor group or House on a similar timetable, they’ll likely be your first friend at Rossall.

Induction doesn’t end after one day, however. Heads of Year, Tutors and Houseparents will regularly check in to make sure you are settling into Rossall life well. All staff are always happy to help if you need it, and you do not have to wait to be asked if you’re setting in, you can talk to anyone at any time.
