The Assembly Hall is at the heart of the school, a place to meet for assembly, hold master class and workshops, perform in-house Music and Drama or host a year group debate.

Our Drama Department is extremely dynamic and aims to deliver a programme of performance opportunities to allow both the ardent drama enthusiast and girls coming to it for the first time to get involved and experience the joy of working collaboratively as a cast and crew. In addition to our two major productions a year, where all who audition will have a part, there are many more formal and informal performance opportunities including events with material written, directed and stage managed by the girls such as the Autumn Cabaret evening. In terms of our less confident girls, we offer plenty of opportunities for them to shine where they can experience drama in more relaxed atmosphere. One of those events is our annual House drama event, in which the girls are encouraged to be involved both on and off stage and many of those new to the stage, blossom for the first time. Some of our recent productions include: The Sound of Music, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Chicago, Grease and an historic performance of the first ever all-girls’ production of Les Misérables which had a cast of eighty, a student orchestra and was a truly ground-breaking and sell out smash hit show. LAMDA and RADA awards are also offered.

We offer superb co-curricular provision. Our Sport, Music, Drama and Art, in particular, are all great strengths of the school and we have a vibrant and extensive after school clubs programme to allow your daughters to try new things and develop new skills.

There are over 40 clubs and extra-curricular options available each year, and whereas some of them have been running for over a decade and always create a waiting list such as Funky Food, Yoga and Magic Club, some of the more unusual clubs such as Bicycle Maintenance Club, Climbing, The Book Upcycling Club, and .b Mindfulness sessions have a smaller, but equally loyal following. Circus Skills and Chess Club have gone particularly wild in the last two years, with participants from every year group eagerly throwing themselves into the cut and thrust of the highly charged early-bird chess tournaments or taking a spin round the Rose Garden on a unicycle at lunchtime. Debating is always popular with girls who like to further exercise their mental and verbal dexterity, whereas PF Music Production Club runs twice a week in our much prized recording studio and allows the First and Second Form girls to build awareness of the subject and try out their burgeoning hands-on skills.

Above Prior's Field

Prior’s Field is the place to achieve – a vibrant, happy and successful home from home which has, at its heart, the encouragement of achievement in all its forms, in every part of our day.

Our ethos is simple: Achieving happy girls, every day, is the key to success for all. The happiness and well-being of our girls has always been at the heart of what we do because we know that contented and fulfilled girls succeed. They have the confidence to step outside the box, take risks, try new challenges and embrace opportunities.  We celebrate achievement in the round – creatively, actively, pastorally and yes of course academically – but not to the exclusion of everything else.  Our interest is in the whole girl; her achievement in everything she does and every aspect of her school life.  In her interaction within the school community; in her belief in herself, in her contribution as a pupil, as a peer, as a friend and as an ambassador for Prior’s Field for the whole of her life.

Mrs Tracy Kirnig MA, PGCE is the 11th Head of Prior’s Field, she joined us in 2015 and has just marked her 7th year in post in the year of our 120th Anniversary Celebrations in 2022.

Born and brought up in London, Mrs Kirnig was educated at Purley High School for Girls. After achieving a BA in Religious Studies and Philosophy at the University of Aberystwyth, she did a PGCE at St Martin’s College in Lancaster, specialising in Religious Studies and Special Educational Needs. She also holds an MA in Education from King’s, London.

“Teaching, to me,” she says, “is quite simply the best occupation in the world. I have always been keenly aware of its significance and potential for good in the lives of young people and society more broadly.”

Mrs Kirnig’s first teaching post was at Stokesley School, in North Yorkshire. She has since worked at several establishments in both the maintained and independent sectors, including St Margaret’s School in Exeter, Kelly College in Tavistock and, most recently, Caterham School, where she was Deputy Head and, for a period, Acting Head.

Tracy Kirnig is married with two adult sons, a foster daughter, two foster-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. She has two German Pointer dogs, two Bengal cats and enjoys walking, travelling, volunteering and the arts. She loves a challenge and during summer 2016 , as a novice climber, set herself the task of scaling all 5,895m of Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Award. She also established a sister school relationship at the time with Tinga Tinga, a 400 pupil primary school in Tanzania, which we have supported and visited with staff and pupils ever since.

When do we need to register our child? Registrations are accepted as early as two years in advance but must be by the end of September in the year prior to joining.

How many applications do you receive for every place? We have 3 applications for every place and this has been the norm for several years. We offer a very different feel within the Surrey throng of excellent girls’ schools and have witnessed many debates amongst deliberating parents as to the pros and cons of the broader cohort we deliberately seek.

Please describe your selection process? We have entry points at 11+, 13+ and 16+.

11+ Entry: For 11+ entry assessment starts in Year 6 with an assessment day on a Saturday in the autumn called Preview Day. The day consists of energetic team activities and creative challenges delivered at a fast pace, as well as Stage 1 of scholarship pre-screening.
Two sessions will be run during the day (morning and afternoon) and parents will receive notification of their daughter’s allocated session following closure of registration.

If your daughter is interested in being considered for a scholarship, then she will need to pick what activities she wishes to participate in for Preview Day that are closest to her scholarship ambitions. Your daughter can only opt for two out of the three subject scholarships in Art, Drama and Sport, but in addition to Music and Academic scholarships, and will be contacted to pick her choices.
As part of the admissions process, every girl is also required to have an individual interview with a senior member of staff. The interviews are fun, warm and all about getting to know the girl. We ask her to briefly share her pastimes, passions, ambitions and what she most enjoys about her current school. Giving girls the opportunity to mutually explore whether we are both right for each other, through 1 to 1 interview, is such a vital part of the admissions journey.

All applicants will then proceed to entrance exams in November which are written in-house and cover Maths, English and Non-verbal papers.

Shortlisted Scholars are invited back for Stage 2 scholarship interviews with departments (as well as Music scholarship assessments) in November/December.

13+ Entry: Entrance Examinations for 13+ applicants take place in early December and comprise of papers in English and Maths. An individual interview for each girl is also scheduled on the exam day as well as an opportunity to have lunch with the current cohort. Art, Drama, Music and Sport Scholarships are offered in December and January.

16+ Entry: Prospective parents and Sixth Form students are invited to the school’s Sixth Form Open Evening in the Autumn Term prior to entry the following September or for an individual tour. Minimum entry to Sixth Form is 6 GCSEs level 5 or above with an 8/9 in the subjects chosen for A Level or a near equivalent. Sixth Form scholarships take place in November and places are offered in December for the following September. Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport scholarships are offered at 16+.

Achieving Academically:

As the individual girl is at the centre of what we do, class sizes are kept small. Personal and academic potential are nurtured.  The spirit of Prior’s Field is one of creativity and enterprise. We place a high priority on the independence of thought, problem-solving and the huge satisfaction that comes from working hard. We are academically ambitious as a school, but the girls are taught not to be in competition with each other, only with themselves.

Our school is full of high performing young women who constantly demonstrate sparkiness and a ‘can do’ attitude. They step up to edit the school magazine, run school council, build and race sports cars and break school sports records. They rise to all sorts of academic challenges through Olympiads and masterclasses, conferences and workshops. Their learning is enriched by the superb line up of authors, academics, artists and adventurers who regularly visit.

The spirit of Prior’s Field is one of creativity and enterprise. We place a high priority on independence of thought, problem solving and the huge satisfaction that comes with working hard. We encourage girls to develop styles of learning that work best for them. In lessons, they are taught essential skills that will help in their future working lives. They also learn the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork and celebrating the success of others.

Dynamic teaching and learning keep everyone focused, challenged and motivated. Talented teachers give the girls that very special gift of believing in them.

From the moment they join us we encourage initiative, curiosity, and self-direction. We want the girls to be leaders not followers; thoughtful, well informed, and confident in their own opinions. We emphasise the power of optimism and the difference that resilience and good study habits can make.

Academic stretch and differentiation:
At PF we are committed to catering individually for each of our girls. Work in lessons is differentiated, giving girls enriched provision as they demonstrate their needs. As appropriate, preps may also be differentiated. Subject teachers deliver challenging lessons with a brisk intellectual and interactive pace. The most academically able are invited to be part of the Huxley Squad programme which encourages them to be involved in specific additional activities such as national and local competitions such as UKMathsTrust (UKMT), Top of the Bench and English Speaking Union (ESU), exhibitions, and lectures, debating and our junior and higher EPQ programme. We have a designated SLT member who is responsible for mentoring all scholars and allowing them the opportunity to discuss their performance and ambitions.

The Huxley Squad is the name for our group of most academically able students. Our aim is to help these girls to identify the academic co-curricular opportunities that are most exciting, engaging or relevant to them. To do this, they will be given a map of what is likely to be on offer throughout the year - the Huxley Route Finder - the purpose of which is to enable girls to personalise their co-curricular experience. They will then plan for which clubs they would like to attend, focusing on specific subjects if they have a flair for Science, Humanities or Languages, or looking more broadly if they have wider interests. Their choices will be discussed and monitored so that they can be guided towards the opportunities that will help them develop new skills and challenge them in new ways. Encouraging the most able to seek out such challenges is crucial to their long-term love of learning.

Achieving Actively

Teamwork is a great strength of the school and sport has a key role to play. Girls are encouraged to get involved and experience the fun and commitment involved in being part of a team. Competition and personal achievement are developed through a wide range of activities. From Hockey, Netball, Football, Tennis, Gymnastics and Riding, to Cricket, Dance, and Athletics, every enthusiasm and level of ability can be met. Our natural position as a school is to be positive, aim high and have a go. Find out more by visiting the Sports Hall.

Prior’s Field Tennis Academy led by Jorge Munoz Martin – Director
Jorge brings 25 years’ experience of playing and coaching tennis in Spain, France, Italy and the UAE. A former Davis Cup captain for UAE, Jorge has coached former ATP (Tennis Professionals Association) top 70 players as well as top 27 WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) players and ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior Players. Some of these players were hitting partners with stars of the game such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams, Lucie Safarova and Jelena Jankovic.

Tennis coaching at Prior’s Field is available to all levels of player, from those picking up a racquet for the first time to those competing at national or international levels. Our coaching options are differentiated as follows:
Elite Academy Players: Pupils demonstrating exceptional tennis ability, ideally with a minimum rating of 8.2, though 9.1 will be considered, at age 11 (year 7). These girls receive a daily, flexible programme of tennis coaching (including sports physiology, fitness training and nutrition advice) and academic education, individually tailored, on one site. Typically they follow a timetable that allows for a bespoke number of hours coaching a week  and need to be able to maintain their academic standards within this framework. Prior’s Field ring-fences a percentage of the normal day fees’ paid by each elite player, to cover their coaching costs. The aim of these pupils is to play at a national and international level.
Talented Team Players: Pupils demonstrating high tennis ability, but whose academic timetable is not altered to incorporate tennis. They take individual or group lessons during and after school hours, paid for on a termly basis by parents, and receive a bespoke tennis programme typically allowing for 4 hours coaching a week.
Development Players: Pupils identified as having the ability to play for Prior’s Field as part of an A, B or C team against other schools. They participate in an hour of paid-for group coaching per week, focusing on tactical and match play.
Recreational Players: 130 pupils choose to take extra-curricular, paid-for tennis lessons. They are of all abilities and the aim for these pupils is that they should be able to join a club in the future and enjoy tennis for life.

Academy, Team, Development and Recreational players all benefit from training by the same, top-class coaches. Academy players are also supported with a programme of sports fitness, psychology and nutrition delivered in partnership with the Surrey Sports Park High Performance Institute.

Achieving Creatively

Music at Prior's Field is rich and varied and must be heard to be fully appreciated. In fact, there are many opportunities to experience our high standard of music, whether on light-hearted occasions such as the Celebration of Christmas, our all-singing, all-dancing Prizegiving, and twice-yearly school productions. Rock Chic combines our rock bands and textiles students in a catwalk fashion show while our more informal "Classics by Candlelight" recitals turn the spotlight on to soloists and small ensembles. In February 2022, Prior’s Field’s initiative, The Battle of the Bands, featuring bands from local schools, proved a great success, with number of entrants doubling in 2023.

Approximately half the girls at Prior’s Field learn instruments and singing privately and there are numerous groups and ensembles on offer. Occasional Superhero Music Workshops are offered to primary and prep schools, led by our music staff and senior music scholars. In October 2022, our A Cappella choir went on tour, performing in Paris and at Disneyland. Plans are in the pipeline for a repeat tour in the future.

Achieving Pastorally:

We actively see to make Prior’s Field a happy and friendly place to learn. We believe that happy girls make happy learners who will achieve their very best. Our girls spend their time at Prior’s Field being known and supported at every stage.

Beginning with our Admissions Department, we ensure that the transition into Prior’s Field is smooth and easy. The wellbeing journey for each individual girl is continued by the Pastoral Team for the duration of her time at Prior’s Field. The sense of belonging is maintained through the amazing activities and events offered by the Alumnae Office who facilitate keeping in touch for years to come.

Prior’s Field has always, since its foundation in 1902, focused on the development of well-rounded, balanced young women. Pastoral support and positive wellbeing are evident in the very vibe that runs throughout the school attracting teaching and support staff who value the ideology. We focus on motivation, self-belief and enjoyment to bring out the best in our pupils; there is no need to drive the girls with relentless pressure.

Our Heads of Year and Wellbeing Coordinator have a range of specialisms relevant to supporting girls as they navigate towards, and through, their teenage years. These include managing stress and anxiety, dealing with academic pressure, navigating friendships, understanding LGBT and coping with the negative issues attached to using social media. They lead teams of tutors who offer the girls immediate and daily support. Successes are celebrated immediately; problems nipped in the bud swiftly.

Experienced First and Second year teams focus getting the girls well settled academically, creatively and pastorally. They get to know the girls and support them in finding their place in the world as they approach their teenage years.

The girls are handed over to knowledgeable and strong Third, Fourth and Fifth year teams who take them through their GCSE years. This has the advantage of supporting new girls who join us in Year 9; they join newly formed groups with a new tutor making it easier to make new friends and integrate into the year group and the school.

Our Sixth Form is exceptional; their expertise in the UCAS process ensures that each individual girl is supported in achieving the best outcome for them. This is clearly demonstrated by the leavers’ statistics.

A programme of Form Time Topics and Pastoral and Wellbeing Days allows Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE), Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) and Careers Guidance to be addressed, discussed and promoted. Using the expertise of outside speakers alongside our own specialist staff, we engage the girls in both pertinent and sensitive topics. We ask them to react and respond to issues to develop and widen their understanding and make good decisions.

Part of preparing our girls for the modern world and equipping them with the skills and strategies needed to be successful includes a programme of mindfulness. All girls will undertake a nine-week accredited course from MISP (Mindfulness in School Project) and further opportunities to support this provision are growing.

Not forgetting that parents are an important part of our pastoral community, we hold Pastoral and Wellbeing Evenings that both inform on current issues and allow for discussion.

Achieving confident young women:

Prior’s Field Sixth Form encourages girls to take responsibility for themselves, their learning and development, so they become confident young women. Our Sixth Formers take the lead in all elements of school life. As prefects, school mentors, house and sports captains, Sixth Formers learn to lead, manage and inspire younger girls. We offer a wide range of A Level subjects as well a Diploma in Criminology and a BTEC in Music Technology.

At a time when post GCSE course options are undergoing a period of change, we offer an enviably bespoke package. Most girls will study three subjects for the two years with an increasing number adding an EPQ. Smaller groups and tutorial style teaching allow for informed discussion and individual attention, as well as providing vital preparation for university.

The Sixth Form House is a lively, exciting place where our students have a voice. Our young adults are given considerable freedom to organise their own lives whilst retaining the support and guidance of an excellent team of tutors and House staff.

Sixth Form personal tutors offer guidance, advice and encouragement throughout the two years. Girls meet their tutors daily in groups and individually; they speak openly about their progress and discuss targets and plans to achieve them.

Achieving through Adventure and Activity:

Walking boots, rucksacks and waterproofs are a vital part of any PF girl’s wardrobe. From their bonding trip in the first term of year one, adventure is a regular offering on the PF extra-curricular menu.

All First Form girls take part in a bonding, induction trip in the Autumn Term. They are challenged in a variety of team-building and physical activities and have a great deal of messy fun. The trip is always a very positive and important experience for the whole year group and their year team leaders.

Many of the curriculum residential trips at home and abroad will see the girls getting out and about and active. These include curriculum related trips to Berlin for History, Iceland for Geography and Rome to support Creative Arts. In addition many opt to follow DofE Bronze, Silver and Gold whilst they are here.

Activities Week falls in the last few weeks of each academic year and does not disappoint those girls who are keen to push their physical and mental boundaries and embark on an adventure.  Some choose the Mystery Trips, others wade straight in for the Water Sports options or sign-up for a Safari.

Probably the greatest adventure of each year is the much-anticipated return to our partner school in Tanzania in the Summer. Boarding a plane just two days after the end of term, our intrepid travellers from the Fifth and Sixth Form truly have the adventure of a life-time with an incredible week teaching in the school, getting to know the community of Tinga Tinga and taking a few days out to go on Safari, trekking in the Arusha National Park.

Achieving through Music:

Over half of our girls learn an instrument, (many involved in the Endangered Instruments Scheme which offers free trials in Harp, Saxophone and Brass) with at least a third of them learning two or more instruments and performing several times a term in a variety of ensembles, both classical and contemporary. We have a thriving Jazz Band, innumerable choirs, rock and pop groups and indeed soloists. The music department is always buzzing with both lessons, impromptu jam sessions and many of our sixth form students composing and making some soulful noise in the recording studio and stunning BTEC Music facilities. Our lower school music scholars perform several times at various venues such as the Guildford Institute, and G Live as well as many school events. Two of the most popular events, ‘Classics and Cakes’ and ‘Classics by Candlelight’ are student-run initiatives which not only give our Sixth Form BTEC students the chance to fulfil part of their qualification, but also offers the scholars an opportunity to perform in a more relaxed environment.

Music is taught for an hour a week to all girls in the First, Second and Third form at Prior’s Field. In addition, throughout the school year, specialist music teachers offer a full range of musical activities, workshops, master classes and trips to concerts and shows. In addition to A level and GCSE Music we also offer students the opportunity to study a BTEC in music production using our fantastic recording studio and state of the art music production suite.

Ensembles

Choirs, string ensemble, concert band, jazz band, flute ensemble, brass ensemble, regular rock and pop workshops, saxophone ensemble, production club, theory and aural test practices.

Four of the Prior’s Field music teachers are vocal specialists, representing all vocal styles. Choir is available for all ages as well as selective Chamber Choirs and vocal ensembles. We also have a Acapella choir which went ‘on tour’ in Paris recently.

Instrumental Lessons: The department currently provides individual lessons in: Bass Guitar; Cello; Clarinet; Cornet; Classical Guitar; Drum kit; Electric Guitar; Flute; French Horn; Harp; Jazz Piano; Oboe; Piano; Saxophone; Rock and Pop Keyboard; Trombone; Trumpet; Viola; Violin.

Theory of Music: We offer individual tuition in the theory of music as and when required. A theory class is also available, free of charge, and for all standards.

Music for All: There is an expectation at Prior’s Field that if you learn a musical instrument, you automatically become a member of the most appropriate musical activities associated with your musical skills, so singers join choirs, rock musicians join rock bands, instrumentalists join concert band, jazz band and smaller instrumental ensembles, while pianists can join rock bands and chamber groups.

Expert Inspiration: We have held public masterclasses with Nicola Benedetti and Janice Watson and have also welcomed guest appearances from Beverley Craven, Carol Decker (T’Pau), and District 3, and have enjoyed gamelan workshops.

Music Technology: Music Technology is taught throughout the school and all girls are encouraged to compose using Cubase and Logic. We also have Sibelius software. The studio is often used for recording students under professional conditions.

Assembly Hall

The Assembly Hall is at the heart of the school, a place
to meet for assembly, hold master class and workshops, perform in-house Music and Drama or host a year group debate.

Dining Hall

The Prior’s Field kitchen is under the very dextrous fingers of Chef Ricky and his wife Kerry who have both worked at PF for over 12 years. Everything is cooked from fresh, home-made soups, breads, bakes, yoghurts and mains a plenty for every palate and dietary need. Both day and boarding staff are eager to sign up for the feast which is breakfast, and many also stay for supper as well as lunch and breaks. Whilst we have meat free Mondays, theme days and a truly extensive range on offer and beautifully displayed on the pass, curries (Katsu is the top ranked), and their Friday favourite of scampi and chips are still the most talked about!

Drama Studio

Drama is taught for an hour a week to all girls in the First, Second and Third Form at Prior’s Field. During these precious years the girls learn both through and about Drama. They develop the ability to work collaboratively in a creative environment that encourages empathy and respect for one another.

Lessons are designed to assess individual strengths and talents introducing performance, practitioner influences and the significance of technical elements of theatre. This journey develops confidence in expression and an ability to view the world from a range of perspectives. There is a balance between exploration of text and issue, with a firm focus on having fun whilst learning.

The Drama Department offers a lively and imaginative approach to all areas of drama from mime and mask work to improvisation and the use of technical resources. The aim is to include as many students as possible in drama activities.

Front of School

Prior’s Field is a dynamic and successful school with a fascinating history. Nestled within 42 acres of stunning Surrey countryside, we feel hundreds of miles away from the hustle and bustle of London but can actually be in the Capital within forty minutes. Our safe, tranquil setting is home to a school with a difference, a place where individuality is celebrated and uniqueness embraced: a happy, positive environment, where the girls enjoy learning.

Our founder, Julia Huxley, was an inspirational teacher with pioneering ideas about the education of young women in Edwardian England. In 1902 she realised her dream. Prior’s Field was established as a progressive school which stimulated its pupils intellectually and broadened their cultural horizons.  Her bold spirit and legacy of successful innovation continue to shape our work today.

This is the route to high achievement that Prior’s Field offers: high expectations and plenty of ambition within an environment that provides both a springboard for success and a safety net.

At the end of their time with us girls will have done very well academically, but it is their experience of school life that will have made all the difference. As they complete their journey, we take great pride in the young women they have become: well balanced, thoughtful of others and fully prepared for the next stage of life. They go on to a broad range of universities to study courses which reflect the independence, diversity and intellectual acumen we have supported. They have a confident belief in shaping their own futures.

Lower School Art

The school has a long and impressive pedigree in the Creative Arts and we are hugely proud to have sent girls to some of the top art schools of St. Martins, Glasgow, Manchester and The Courtauld Institute. Creative Arts is a thriving part of the school both in and outside of the curriculum. In the First Form all girls attend a weekly period of Art as part of the curriculum, plus 2 lesson per week of Textiles as part of the technology rotation.

They will also study Food Technology and DT as part of this rotation. We believe in building strong foundation skills in Art and the visual world to foster the core ability that the girls will need for GCSE and onwards. We have many visiting speakers, creative workshops and events to inspire the girls and give them the opportunity to showcase their work.

Our Heritage:

Prior’s Field was the fulfilment of a dream for Julia Huxley, granddaughter of Dr Thomas Arnold, the reforming headmaster of Rugby School and niece of poet Matthew Arnold. Married to Charterhouse schoolmaster Leonard Huxley, she had long cherished an ambition to open a school of her own. She bought a five-acre plot and a moderate sized house on the outskirts of Godalming and, in January 1902, opened her progressive school for girls with just six pupils and her seven-and-a-half-year-old son, Aldous.

The Huxleys and Prior’s Field

Julia Arnold met Leonard Huxley when they were both studying at Oxford in the 1880s. Julia and Leonard married in 1885 and moved to Godalming where Leonard had been appointed a junior classics master at Charterhouse.

The Huxley’s marriage brought together two of the most pre-eminent intellectual families of late Victorian England. The Arnolds and the Huxleys were numbered amongst and elite group of thinkers and scientists at the forefront of discovery and philosophy.

The founder of the Huxley dynasty was the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley who defended the theory of evolution published in The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin in 1859. Thomas Huxley had little formal education and taught himself Latin and Greek; he became a distinguished professor and president of the Royal Society. His interests were not limited to Science, and he was a keen advocate of literature and the arts being taught in schools.

Thomas Henry’s son Leonard was to become a renowned editor and literary journalist after many years of teaching. As a school master at Charterhouse he was noted as a “kindly and sympathetic man” unlike many of his contemporaries. At Prior’s Field, Leonard and Julia created a home as well as a school and Leonard was well known to the staff and girls. After Julia’s untimely death he retained his connection with the school for the rest of his life.

Julian and Aldous Huxley

Julian and Leonard Huxley’s children grew up in a home where thought about science, religion and education informed family life. Two of their sons were to become world famous. Sir Julian Huxley was a scientist, Director of UNESCO and founding member of the World Wildlife Fund. Aldous Huxley was famed as a writer, philosopher and novelist. Aldous wrote numerous novels, plays, short stories and poems. His dystopian novel Brave New World includes many references to the Godalming area of Surrey where he grew up.

Prior’s Field and CFA Voysey

The private house in which Julia Huxley opened Prior’s Field was designed by renowned Arts and Crafts architect Charles Francis Annesley Voysey. Originally called Prior’s Garth, it was built in 1900 for a colleague of Leonard Huxley’s who never occupied it. The Huxleys acquired it in 1901 and Julia obtained permission to use it as a ‘high-class school for girls’.

The rooms of the original house are still in use by Prior’s Field School and are fondly remembered by all who lived and worked in them. When Voysey designed Prior’s Garth, he was at the pinnacle of his career in creating attractive, homely, yet very modern houses for discerning clients. The building is typical of his work with cottage-style characteristics, roughcast exterior walls, steeply pitched roofs and prominent chimneys. Inside the house, the Oak Hall with its fine dominant staircase, panelling and deep tiled fireplace exemplifies his austere but cosy style. Many of Voysey’s favourite motifs of hearts and birds are evident on fire surrounds, air vents and door furniture throughout the building.

The garden laid out by Voysey which features dry stone walls and a dipping pond fed by rainwater, was planted in a Gertrude Jekyll inspired design with roses, lavender and herbaceous borders. Both Julia and her husband were keen gardeners and Leonard brought many plants for his rockery back from his trips abroad with his sons.

The school quickly outgrew the first house, and an extension was commissioned in 1903 from Thomas Müntzer, a pupil of CFA Voysey. These additions were faithful to Voysey’s principles; Müntzer’s exteriors create a unified design and his interiors continue Voysey’s use of enclosing upright bannisters, green tiled fireplaces and exposed woodwork in the attractive and practical rooms. Müntzer did further work in later additions which carried on the established style. Later buildings of the twentieth century and those of more recent years have faithfully echoed and re-interpreted Voysey’s work to give Prior’s Field a particular charm and attractiveness, true to its arts and crafts roots.

Prior's Field

What makes Prior’s Field distinctive? Our reply is that we are a school focused on the development of unique individuals. Our small size is a huge advantage in this, but we also have a strong family ethos, wonderful team spirit and big ambitions for our girls. We believe that education is about far more than rank orders, school statistics and that which can be measured. Our commitment is to provide space for individuality, initiative and enterprise to blossom. At Prior’s Field no girl is invisible. Your daughter will be known and valued for who she is. Every girl is different – and we like that. Girls tell us time and again that they love their school, feel at home and are happy. They have great friends. They enjoy unforgettable experiences. They work hard and aim high. They are at ease with themselves and take real delight in surpassing all expectations.

Bringing out the best in young people requires heart, dedication, and passion. It takes inspiration and sensitivity. A culture that is fearful, unforgiving of mistakes or unhealthily competitive cannot transform lives. This is why we focus on motivation, self-belief and enjoyment. Visitors comment on the buzz and energy of the school. Participation is hugely important to us and staff provide wonderful opportunities beyond the classroom. We are an exciting school with a spirit of adventure!

School House Lounge

Boarding at Prior’s Field combines the love and care of a family home with the stimulation, variety and support of a school. Modern day boarding has never been better and we are proud that our knowledgeable, caring and experienced staff offer the highest standards in their pastoral care and support of our young people as recognised by our most recent ISI inspection (2022) which spoke of how “boarders cultivate the caring ethos of the school successfully” and “say they have a strong sense of community” as “Pupils frequently give each other a strong sense of support, celebrating and congratulating each other’s achievements”.

Flexibility is the key, as we offer full, weekly and half-weekly boarding to suit the needs of modern families. We understand that parents are aiming to be strong role models for their children, often both working, so may risk being pulled in all directions running them to clubs, activities, supporting homework and being a taxi service to allow for social activities.

If girls board, all of those things are taken care of by us, with time saved on travelling to and from school. At Prior’s Field, we know that boarding is a decisive added bonus to an independent education. Boarding should not be considered as a necessity or a chore; modern boarding works for modern parents and provides an alternative option to after school clubs, home alone children or paid nannies.

Weekday evenings and weekends are carefully structured to provide supervised prep and academic support, the opportunity to get involved with clubs, sports and activities and the all-important time with friends and their boarding family.

Our boarding houses exude warmth, homeliness and most important of all – laughter. Highs are celebrated and lows are shared – no girl feels she has to cope on her own. Close communication between us, parents and school staff, with the boarder at the centre, allows us to develop almost bespoke care for your daughter.

Boarders have an extended programme of supervised activities after school and at weekends. They are always busy and fully engaged, but still find time to relax and have fun with their friends and boarding staff. Outings are organised every weekend, some well in advance and others spontaneously. Weekends will see the girls out, visiting London museums, places of cultural or historical interest, theatre visits, ice-skating, bowling, theme parks or shopping in Godalming, Guildford or Bluewater.

When they leave Prior’s Field they don’t just walk away with an exceptionally high standard of education, they take with them wonderful memories and lifelong friends.

Sixth Form Art

Our art department has a wonderful array of facilities which include a general studio, a dark room, a ceramics studio and a sixth form studio. We also have a history of art classroom and a resources area with a bank of computers and a fantastic collection of art books. Our gallery space is used for internal and external exhibitions and throughout the year display the girls’ many successes through a diverse exhibition programme.

We offer an exciting and stimulating environment where girls can feel confident in expressing their individual ideas and perspectives. The department is able to offer an enormous variety of skills and techniques from ceramics, painting, printmaking, sculpture, Textiles and Photography to regular life-drawing with the older girls. History of Art is taught as a separate subject and is an important part of our sixth-form curriculum. Teaching is vigorous and wide-ranging. We encourage an atmosphere of exploration, experimentation, determination and independence.

Sports Hall

We are hugely lucky to attract a significant number of girls who excel in both mainstream and esoteric sports and really feel this is an area where we definitely punch above our weight in relation to other schools who are known for their sporting prowess. The Physical Education and Games programme at Prior’s Field is busy, varied, challenging and fun. Our goal is to balance performance with participation and so our ethos is a healthy blend of ‘pursuit of sporting excellence’ and ‘sport for all’.

We enter several District and County level tournaments in our core sports and we also have girls competing nationally in an array of individual sports most notably Tennis due to our Tennis Academy. Sports offered: Autumn and Winter Term: Hockey, Netball, Football, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Fitness and Ball skills. In the Summer Term, the core sports are Athletics, Rounders, Cricket and Tennis. There are numerous sports clubs and activities throughout the week both before and after school, including team training sessions at lunchtimes. Additional sporting clubs include: Climbing, Trampolining, Riding and Golf.

Textiles

Creative Arts is a thriving part of the school. In the First Form, all girls attend a weekly period of Art as part of the curriculum, plus 3 lessons per week of Textiles as part of the technology rotation.  They will also study Food Technology and DT as part of this rotation.

We believe in building strong foundation skills in Art and the visual world to provide the core ability the girls will need for GCSE and onwards. The Creative Arts Department is an important part of the school and has gained a considerable reputation for the school as a centre of excellence. Art, Photography and Textiles pieces are displayed throughout the site giving girls further opportunities to showcase their work and celebrate the breadth and variety of talents.

Creative Arts Clubs:

A variety of clubs are available and include photography, crafts, textiles and sculpture as well as Aspirations Club for the most gifted artists. At GCSE and A Level, we have clubs specifically designed to support the projects undertaken in lessons and to help extend the skills needed at that stage of learning for example, life drawing classes.

Competitions:

We run an annual house art competition for girls from all years. Entries are judged by prominent artists and external educators as well as by the school community, with prizes for the winners and house points for all entrants. Entering work externally is actively encouraged, with girls exhibiting a number of exhibitions including The Mall Galleries, The National Gallery, ISADA exhibition and more locally in Godalming.

Trips:

Each year students in all year groups are taken to London to see the best of exhibitions and have the opportunity to sign-up for the 3 day, arts focused Activity Week trip. A very popular 5-day residential art and culture trip runs annually to Italy for Second to Fourth Form girls. In the Sixth Form, girls are offered an annual five day Art and Photography residential trip – recent locations have included, Paris, Rome, Seville and St. Ives.  Sixth Form Textiles trips have included residential outings to Barcelona, Paris and Milan plus visits to London Fashion week.

Do pupils share rooms?

Depending on the year group you are in, we have a number of different room arrangements. If you are in First or Second Form, you will be sharing a room with others. If you re going into the Third, Fourth or Fifth Form then you will be lucky enough to have a bedroom to yourself. This makes life a little quieter and makes studying easier too. At the end of every term, we review bedrooms and have a ‘room change’ so that you have the opportunity to get to know others in the house and de-clutter.

What time is bedtime and lights off?

8.30pm bedtime routine starts, handing in of phones and devices with lights off at staggered times for different age groups from 9.00pm to 10.15pm.

How will I keep in touch with my family?

Before and after school, when you are free, you can call, text, contact parents, guardians, family and friends by using your phones and any apps which are age appropriate and accessed via the schools’ Wi-Fi to keep you safe. Phones are handed in at night in a lockable charging trolly if you are in First to Third Form. The Boarding House will also facilitate with flexible options if different time zones make it difficult to make contact with loved ones. You will also have an individual school email and post and parcels are brought up to the house every day.

How do I transfer from the airport?

We ask that every overseas pupil has an appointed and trusted guardian before you arrive in the UK who will be responsible for accompanying you and organising your safe transport from the airport.

Are there compulsory exeats?

There are no compulsory exeats.

Can family and friends visit me?

Yes of course, family and friends can ask permission from the Boarding staff to come and pick you up for a day or overnight stay as long as an adult will be present.

What happens during evenings and weekends?

At the weekends we spend time together, watching films, playing in the sports hall and gardens, dog walking in the woods as well as planned activities which include cultural, cinema and shopping trips, outward bound, theme parks and visits to seasonal events like Christmas Markets.

Who do I talk to if I have a problem?

Learning Support:

The aim of the Learning Support department is to realise the school aims by enabling all our students to be happy and engaged in their learning and to realise their academic potential. We aim to enable students to understand and manage their difficulties and to ensure that, as far as possible, they do not become a barrier to school success. We play a significant role in improving the quality of learning for all students across the curriculum. Our goal is to ensure that our girls become independent and confident despite their learning differences.

We do this by:

* Appropriate assessment and monitoring of all pupils to identify any Specific Learning Difficulty and provide appropriate and reasonable intervention in a timely manner.

* Ensuring maximum awareness among subject staff of Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and to be continually updated on developments of good practice.

* Ensuring that all teaching staff are able to respond to pupils’ learning needs with the appropriate professional skills and differentiation during lessons.

* Ensuring that every member of the teaching staff can plan their lessons in ways that encourage the maximum participation and learning of all students.

* Students with SEND having access to the whole curriculum by identifying appropriate differentiation during lessons so they can progress at the appropriate pace in learning.

* Involving parents and students in all decisions, as partners in education.

* Creative, rigorous and ambitious SEND teaching in 1:1 and small group lessons which reflects best practice and the most up to date methods.

* Ongoing, detailed and appropriately diagnostic assessment and categorisation of students by level of intervention.
